The Breath is a Tool we Carry

One day my daughter called me from college crying.

She had to give a five-minute talk about the nervous system in front of her class, and she was panicking.

At first, she was too upset to even hear me.

So I waited. I let her breathe. I stayed calm for her until she could calm down enough to listen.

Then I told her, “You know more about this than you think.”

She had grown up doing yoga with me. She had practiced being my student for years. She had heard me talk about the nervous system, breath, and calming the body more times than she probably realized.

I reminded her that pranayama is one of the tools we use to help regulate the nervous system.

Pranayama is breath practice. It’s the way we use the breath on purpose.

Not to pretend everything is fine.

But to help the body feel safe enough to come back to the present moment.

She ended up giving her talk, and she even had her class practice breath work.

Afterward, she called me excited because her professor was impressed.

That moment reminded me why I teach this.

Yoga isn’t just what happens on the mat.

The breath comes with you.

Into classrooms.
Into hard conversations.
Into grief.
Into change.
Into the moments when your body feels overwhelmed and you need a way back.

That’s why I teach pranayama.

Because sometimes one intentional breath is the beginning of finding yourself again.

Question:
Have you ever used your breath to get through a hard moment?
